Recent movie star divorce announcements

It isn't easy being both a movie star and a spouse. Movie stars typically spend much of their time on sets far from home, and their marriages can turn into long-distance relationships as a result. Many actors and actresses also have high-profile spouses in industries like film, television, and sports, adding extra challenges to their relationships. So it's not always surprising when movie stars announce that they're divorcing their husbands or wives. The list below includes details about five recent Hollywood relationship casualties.

1. Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher
One of Hollywood's highest-profile May-December relationships officially ended in December 2012 when Ashton Kutcher filed for divorce from Demi Moore. Kutcher, the star of films such as "Valentine's Day" and "No Strings Attached," initiated the divorce proceedings after the couple had been separated for more than a year. Moore, who is fifteen years older than Kutcher, responded to Kutcher's request for divorce in March 2013, and the two will handle all of the legalities in court. The couple does not have children together, but there's a lot of money at stake. Kutcher earned a reported $24 million last year from his role on the TV show "Two and a Half Men," and Moore has a prolific Hollywood career that stretches from her breakout role in 1984's "Blame It on Rio" to the more recent "LOL."

2. Diane Lane and Josh Brolin
Diane Lane, best known for her roles as a sultry adulterer in "Unfaithful" and a soft-hearted victim of an adulterous husband in "Under the Tuscan Sun," and actor Josh Brolin announced their divorce in February 2013. This is the second divorce for Brolin, who was one of Hollywood's hottest actors in 2007 and 2008 with critically acclaimed roles in "No Country for Old Men," "American Gangster," and "Milk." This is also the second divorce for Lane. Her marriage to actor Christopher Lambert ended in 1994. Brolin and Lane had been married since 2004, and both stars have children from their previous marriages.

3. Michael Welch and Marissa Lefton
Michael Welch and Marissa Lefton opted for a decidedly unromantic Valentine's Day by filing for divorce. Welch is known to "Twilight" fans for his role as Bella's baby-faced suitor, Mike, and he has been separated from Lefton since December 2011. Lefton has a bit of big-screen exposure herself, having played the role of three-year-old Annie in the 1991 comedy, "Father of the Bride." The couple married in 2008, when Welch's Hollywood career was just starting its upward swing. At just twenty-five years old, the blonde-haired, blue-eyed actor likely has plenty of good years ahead of him in his career as well as his love life.

4. Ashley Judd and Dario Franchitti
Ashley Judd and Dario Franchitti made one of the first celebrity divorce announcements of 2013 when they publicized their split soon after the New Year's holiday. Judd has had a number of lauded big-screen performances over the years, including roles in the films "Kiss the Girls," "Double Jeopardy," and "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood." Although she's acted in a number of other recent movies, Judd's main role these days seems to be as the most recognizable fan of the University of Kentucky's men's basketball team. Franchitti is one of the world's top Indy Car racing drivers, having won the sport's prestigious Indianapolis 500 in 2007. The couple had been married since 2001.

5. Dennis Quaid and Kimberly Buffington-Quaid
Dennis Quaid has some experience when it comes to divorce proceedings, and it looks like he's going to get a little more. Quaid, whose Hollywood career spans five decades and includes leading roles in films such as "The Big Easy," "Frequency," and "Far From Heaven," is due to file divorce papers after his third wife, Kimberly Buffington-Quaid, filed for a legal separation in October 2012. After nearly eight years of marriage and the birth of twins in 2008, Buffington-Quaid had originally filed for divorce in March 2012. She withdrew her petition two months later, but decided once again to end the marriage a few more months after that. The recent filing for separation is a formality, with the couple expected to follow through to divorce this time. Quaid had previously been married to actresses P.J. Soles and Meg Ryan.

These couples may have been unable to reconcile their differences, but it shouldn't be long before all parties find new romantic interests. Ashton Kutcher is already involved in a highly publicized relationship with star actress Mila Kunis. As hearts continue to break and mend in Hollywood, one divorce announcement to keep an eye out for is that of Russell Crowe. The Academy Award winner recently separated from his wife, Danielle Spencer, and it remains to be seen whether these two can work out their differences.
