Petroleum distillates causes birth defects.
Benzene is also in gasoline and is known to cause leukemia.
Leukemia is a form of cancer.
On November 02, 2011 in Hilo, on the island of Hawai'i, also known as the Big Island, an operator error had caused about 14,700 gallons of diesel fuel
to spill at the Aloha Petroleum's bulk fuel storage facility.
Aloha Petroleum stated that there was no fuel spillage in the harbor and that the oil is being cleaned up by Environmental contractors.
The spill was released by workers that were offloading the fuel from a barge on Tuesday. An operator had miscalculated the amount and overflowed the tank.
Public areas have not been affected by the oil spill.
