Recent Double Tragedy at Cat Haven

By far the most healing thing in my life has been my relationship with my own pets, followed by my appreciation of other animals and the beauty of nature. As I am such an animal lover, I have been extremely distraught about the recent double tragedy at Cat Haven sanctuary.

I’m sure you are aware by now of the recent death of the intern working there and the subsequent murdering of the lion involved in the incident. As soon, as I heard of the incident, I knew that they would kill the lion. Unfortunately, I was not wrong about this. While it is certainly a horrible thing that the girl was attacked, as she was a huge animal lover, I feel very confident that neither she nor her family would have wanted the cat killed. In fact, her family has encouraged the facility to reopen and encouraged people to make donations to the facility.

I don’t understand why animals which are simply being animals are sacrificed when incidents happen that are usually the result of human error, humans tormenting the animal or humans being somewhere they are not supposed to be. Not to mention that in most cases, the animals should not be in captivity in the first place!

Why are all animal facilities and law enforcement not trained and equipped with guns which will instantly sedate the animals? This seems like a much more humane way of dealing with a situation, rather than always defaulting to killing the animal. I feel it demonstrates a basic lack of respect for all animal life.

We are all animals living on this planet. We as humans should demonstrate a respect for all life, not just human life.

Please complain to the Fresno County Sheriff, Margaret Mims, for the way that they handled this situation. What could have been a single tragedy was turned into a double tragedy because their officers were not equipped and trained in a protocol designed to sedate an animal instead of kill it.
Please also complain to anyone you can think of that might possibly be able to get this protocol changed on a national level. I would appreciate any feedback you may have on what can be done to change this. I am heartbroken to continually hear that animals are killed when these unfortunate incidents occur, making them even more unfortunate.
