Episode: The Junk Food of Despair for Racing Through Youth
Note: Recap will contain spoilers.
Recap: With the end of the most recent trail, the fifth floor has now been opened for exploration. They meet in the cafeteria afterwards, where Hagakure reports on a botanical garden which featured a large flower, a chicken coop, and a storage shed. Togami reports no further stairs go up from this new floor, so the building only has five floors. He also reported finding a bloody classroom, where it was possible the “event” happened.
When Kirigiri says she’ll investigate the classroom, Togami gets suspicious of her true motives of always investigating things on her own, and demands to know who she really is. Kirigiri tells him that she can’t tell him, because she doesn’t know herself. He doesn’t believe her, and announces he’s going to restrict her movements by taking away her room key. The others think he’s taking it too far, but Kirigiri agrees to it and gives him the key, frustrating Togami.
When Fukawa makes her report, she pulls out her find – a survival knife. The group agrees that it would be too dangerous in her hands, so its entrusted to Naegi. Soon after, Monokuma makes an announcement to come to the gym, and he does not look happy – someone has stolen his “treasure,” and his immediate suspicions fall on Kirigiri due to her disappearance.
While waiting in his room and contemplating what Kirigiri is up to, she shows up and tells him to meet her in the public bath. There, she shows him the “treasure” she took from the principal’s office – a mysterious key with a Monokuma charm on it. When Naegi ask Kirigiri where she got it, she explains that when she went to the principal’s office, it was unlocked – Oogami’s promised act of revenge on Monokuma. She states that is where she learned about Super High School Despair Mukuro Ikusaba, the mysterious 16th student of the school, and the one that might be behind all of it. Kirigiri swears Naegi to silence on this information until she can get more, which he promises to do. She also asks him for onie more favor – distract Monokuma while she finds out where the key goes to.
In his attempt to distract Monokuma, Naegi asks him what his treasure is. An angry Monokuma tells him that it’s a “secret.” He also guesses the reason why there aren’t cameras in the bath – the lenses would fog up. Naegi tries to keep him occupied, but can’t for much longer.
That night, a sick Naegi starts having a fever dream, where he’s telling himself that he has to stay at the school. He wakes up and sees a masked figure holding the survival knife in his hand. After waking up a second time, Kirigiri is standing over him.
The next morning, Naegi starts to think that what he saw was a dream. But he discovers that the knife is missing from the drawer.
Naegi goes looking for the others, and finds them in the gym, dismantling a Monokuma. He starts to panic, but they told him that it was already broken when they found him. During the monokuma dissection, Hagakure finds a motion sensor bomb, which Togami had disabled. The suspicion on why this Monokuma stopped working was that something happened to the Puppet Master, whom Togami is certain is the principal.
They go to the principal’s office, which is now locked. Togami orders Fukawa to get a mattock from the shed in the garden, but Genocider Shou is the one who returns empty handed since she showed up in the garden and didn’t know why she was there. She then announces that there’s a dead body in the garden.
The body, covered in a white coat, is stabbed, and wearing a mask. When Fukawa tries to take it off, the body blows up, charring half of it. After the charring, Togami notices the tattoo on the hand of the body, which makes Naegi think that this is the body of Mukuro Ikusaba. But everyone else suspects that it might be Kirigiri.
Togami finds a key, next to the body, and they discover that it opens Monokuma’s control room. They discover a television in there, and thinking that it will be a link to the outside world they try to turn it on. But Monokuma mysteriously shows up, and reveals that they are actually on a reality show that’s being broadcast all over the nation, and that there is no hope of anyone coming to save them from it. His sudden personality change – using bear puns – makes the students suspicious of what’s going on. He then reminds them that they have a dead body to investigate, and that the next class trial is coming up.
After the end credits, Kirigiri shows up, establishing Naegi’s suspicions, and thanks Naegi for his help.
Review: Learned a lot of information in this episode about what Monokuma is doing, although we still aren’t clear on his motivations yet. As we get more and more into the story, we are starting to slowly connect the pieces of the puzzle, and this episode gave us hope that this is coming to a quick end for the remaining students. Next week: The Class Trial. Who will be found guilty and punished?
