Episode: (Not) Normal Arc: All All Apologies
Note: Recap will contain spoilers.
Recap: The episode starts with Oogami and Monokuma fighting in the gym while Naegi watches unseen through the door. Oogami tells Monokuma that she isn’t going to work with him anymore, and Monokuma reminds her about mysterious “hostages.” Naegi makes a guess that Oogami is the mole.
With the end of the last trial, the fourth floor is now open to the remaining students for exploration. With the only rooms locked being the headmaster’s office and the data processing room, there are no additional clues found. Kirigiri approaches Naegi about the secret room, where Naegi lets her know that he was knocked out before he could discover anything, but remembered the note. Kirigiri warns him not to say too much because of the cameras, and asks him if he has any secrets that she’s keeping from him. Naegi considers telling Kirigiri about Oogami, but tells her that he can’t tell her, fearing revealing what he knows would spread unproven rumors. The secrecy upsets Kirigiri, telling him that if she were really a friend he should tell her.
In the cafeteria, they talk about the two locked rooms and how secrets could be stored in those two rooms. When Hagakure suggests Oogami could break down the doors, Monokuma comes on the monitors and tells them that he’s adding a new rule to the game – they can’t break down doors. Asahina remembers that they still have Alter Ego to give them information, and they go to see him.
Alter Ego tells them that in the files that he managed to crack, he discovered that the principal was putting forth a plan to isolate the students in the academy due to an incident that happened a year ago. He also says that the principal is in his late thirties and is probably somewhere inside the building, making them think that he is the Puppetmaster. At that point, Monokuma calls the remaining students to the gym for an announcement.
Monokuma calls the students into the gym, where he reveals that Oogami is the mole. Asahina doesn’t want to believe it, but Oogami confirms that she was the mole. Naegi then comes forward and reveals whaat he saw in the gym the night before. Togami refuses to believe that she can be trusted, and asks her if she knows who the Puppetmaster is. She says that she doesn’t know that, but reveals what her mission was – to kill someone if there were no murders after a few days. She says that she takes full responsibility for her actions, and apologizes to Asahina for not telling her sooner, and leaves. This starts an argument within the group, resulting in Asahina slapping Togami. Kirigiri reminds them that this is part of the Puppetmaster’s game, and that Togami is going to regret his lack of feelings towards his fellow students.
The next morning, screaming is heard from the cafeteria. A fight between Genocider Shou and Asahina results in her getting cut by her scissors, and Hagakure hiding under a table. Asahina reveals that her and Genocider got into an argument about Sakura. A worried Oogami comes running into the Nurse’s office, and gets upset that Asahina got hurt instead of her. She promises not to do anything, just let her know what isn’t “acceptable.”
Kirigiri tells Naegi that she is no longer mad at him, but that his keeping Oogami’s mole status a secret still didn’t show that Naegi trusted him. She then reveals that Alter Ego has something to tell them.
Alter Ego tells Naegi and Kirigiri that he wants to be connected to the network to help them find more information about the school, knowing that the mission could be dangerous. Kirigiri wants to honor his wishes, and suggests the now empty hidden room. Naegi takes him up, and promises that they will all leave together.
Kirigiri comes to get Naegi, who brings him to the locked Game Room where Oogami is sitting inside a locked room unresponsive. They break in, and Oogami is definitely dead, a smile on her face. She’s been hit on the head twice, and there are signs that she’s vomited blood. Naegi says he still feels squeamish about being around the dead friends, but Kirigiri has a feeling that in her past she’s had to deal with corpses before, and says that they have a “locked room murder.” When Togami, Fukawa, and Hagakure enter and discover that the corpse is Oogami, Asahina accuses the three of them that they are the only suspects that could have killed her – she reveals that Sakura asked the three of them to come meet her in the game room, so it has to be one of them. The episode ends with Monokuma’s maniacal laughter.
Review: A lot of tension in this episode. The revelation of Oogami as the mole is a particular surprise to those who have never played the game, especially since she’s always so quiet and has helped out investigations in the past. The episode had some good moments, including Kirigiri’s conversation with Togami about how his lack of emotion for his classmates will bite him in the end someday and Alter Ego’s wanting to help them solve the mystery. Next Week: It’s the Class Trial. Will the killer be revealed as Togami? Hagakure? Fukawa/Genocider Shou? Or is there someone else?
