Over 2,300 runners participated in Greenville’s Spinx Run Fest last Saturday, October 26. The event featured many local runners as well as out of state residents. Some of these runners completed their first ever marathon. Race finishers represented 28 states, along with the District of Columbia, which underscores the growing popularity of Spinx. In the Carolina Marathon, Greenville resident Jim Harper, 36, returned with a bang after battling injuries the past year. His winning time of 2:37:37 was just three minutes off the event record. Greenville’s Catherine Adams, 22, was the overall female winner in 3:03:10. In all, 43 runners achieved the Boston qualifying standard for their respective age groups on a chilly, but ideal day for running. For most of the morning, temperatures remained in the 30s. One of those runners who qualified for Boston was master’s runner, Joe Hammond, former president of the Greenville Track Club. Earlier this fall, Joe took top honors at the Darlington Half Marathon (against many competitors half his age). His time of 2:59:03 at the Spinx Run Fest was good enough for 7th place overall. In the Run Town USA Half Marathon, Spartanburg’s Ashley Liew, 26, topped a field of 1,133 runners in 1:15:41. Simpsonville’s Kristi Arledge, former champion in the marathon event, emerged victorious for the women in a time of 1:26:05.
The event also included the inaugural Greenville Downtown 10K that took runners through some of the city’s historic neighborhoods and Cleveland Park. Later in the evening, 560 participants turned out for the new Big Pumpkin’s Haunted 5K.
