On Wednesday the UFC traveled to Brazil to give fight fans their third card in a week. UFC Fight Night 28 was mostly Brazilian showcase as the promotion traveled to one of the more prominent locations in modern martial arts. The top of the card featured three bouts that pushed the winners one step closer to receiving title shots in their respective weight classes.
Glover Teixeira needed less than a round to put away Ryan Bader with a technical knockout. Glover and Ryan exchanged take down attempts in an effort to make this more of a grappling match, but once the leather started to fly it would be the Brazilian that would come out on top.
Bader was able to rock Glover and send him down to one knee but rushing in to attempt a finish would be his undoing. Teixeira would land a counter blow that would stun and drop the American wrestler. Glover then pounced on Bader and finished him off with strikes at the 2:55 point of the first round.
With 20 straight wins and 5 in the Octagon, Glover Teixeira has set himself up to be the man to face the winner of the Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson fight that is set to occur in three weeks.
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza once again uncorked his right hand to finish off an opponent. This time it was Yushin Okami who was dropped in less than five minutes into their bout.
The two competitors exchanged blows in the middle of the cage to begin the contest but when Okami tried a lazy front kick with his back to the cage, Souza stepped in and landing an overhand right that dropped the Japanese standout. A few more shots to his prone opponent allowed Souza to get his second win and place himself on the short list of middleweight title contenders.
Team Alpha Male fighter Joseph Benavidez also finished his opponent in the first round as he was able to walk through Jussier da Silva.
The competitors exchanged strikes and it was clear that Joseph was the more technical and powerful striker on the feet. Jussier would never be able to get this fight to the floor at any point. The end would come when Benavidez would land a knee followed up with a right hand that would send “Formiga” crashing down to the canvas. A few additional shots would bring the fight to an end via referee stoppage.
