“Therefore I positioned men behind the lower parts of the wall, at the openings; and I set the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. And I looked, and arose and said to the nobles, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.” Nehemiah 4:11-14
In my morning devotions I have been rereading the book of Nehemiah. I love the reminder of the importance of rebuilding the wall of protection and the preservation of the heritage of the people. As I read it though, I find like Nehemiah in the first few verses of the book, that I am in distress and morn for my nation. I have wept and prayed and beseeched God for the restoration of our godly heritage. Every day it seems as though the walls of protection and preservation have crumbled a bit more. I was extremely weary and sorrowful until I began reading Nehemiah again.
Although I am not a Bible scholar, I do see parallels of importance to the account in Nehemiah and the current state of the United States of America. I believe the walls that protected America in her past have been broken down. The core of our Christian faith and dedication to serve the one true God have been pushed aside and trampled upon nearly to the point of extinction. In my opinion apathy and a misunderstanding of what it means to stand firm in our faith have been two of the main culprits.
I know the importance of knowing God’s word and rightly applying its truths to our everyday lives. I also know there is a fine line between being a Christian who adheres to the precepts in the word of God and stands firm in faith and a sociopath who misinterprets Scripture for their own gain. Having said that let me explore an idea with you.
As a nation who was established on Christian principles and blessed with God’s protection and providence for years, on a progress report of keeping true to our heritage and protecting the wall, how do you think we’re doing? Now everyone has a right to believe as they choose to believe, but at some point in our journey we all give account for the things we have done or failed to do. So again, as a nation who was given the freedom to serve God and be a light of Christian faith, how do you think we’re doing?
I write this to fellow believers who have been charged by God to keep watch on the wall of our faith and to protect the heritage He has given us. I implore you to stand firm and not become distracted or discouraged by the circumstances in and around us. God is with us and has promised to never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He has also told us to take up the full armor and stand firm. (Ephesians 6) Although we may not see the arsenal of our enemy, we are in a daily battle and need to gird ourselves up with the power and might of God and stand firm where He has told us to stand. Above all things remember the victory is ours for the battle belongs to the LORD. (1 Samuel 17:47)
May He receive all the honor and glory and be forever praised!!
