Boomer Biker's 'thumbs up' for Bultaco and Pursang
The year was 1963. I was a teen and riding motorcycles consumed me. Fortunately, I had enough raw talent to get sponsored as a scrambles racer by my local motorcycle shop. Unfortunately for me, I soon found out that, trying as hard as I could, I still couldn’t beat that crazy rider on the Bultaco.

Those powerful Spanish 2-stroke Bultaco scramblers had just shown up on the American motorcycle scene and they where a huge hit among serious racers. When a guy by the name of Royal Sherbert (from the best of my recollection, I think that’s how you spell his name) started racing one of the first Bultaco’s in Florida, he immediately became the one to beat.
And as for me, I’ll never forget that shrill, high-pitch sound of Royal Sherbert’s Bultacco each time he passed me - like I was going the wrong way - on the scrambles track. And the smell of that Pursang’s exhaust also earned a place of honor in the fabric of my life.
So, when I recently discovered that two Spaniards, Jim Palau-Ribes and Roger Gubert, were making a genuine attempt to resurrect this brand with a new motorcycle company called Pursang, I knew that I had to immediately sit down, write this article and spread the word, to all those that care, about Bultaco – the motorcycle that has had such an indelible affect on my personal psyche.
Manufacturing of the prototype is slated to begin in early 2009 and believe me, I’ll be waiting a my dealer’s door to swing my leg over the seat of a brand spankin’ new Pursang - when these boys finally role out their finished product.

Mr. Hosking - I think that "Royal Sherbert" was yet another name used by Steve McQueen to hide his true identity.

Never forget the first time I saw 125 Bultacos being raced at Oulton Park in the early 60s. They made everything else look like they were standing still and did they scream..! They usually occupied the first 10 or so places. Always fancied a Metralla for road use.
