I often get questions asking what types of clubs are good one which nights. Well once in a while I'm going to just give good recommendations for certain nights. For a Saturday night the two best places to go for an authentic good hip hop nightclub is definitely Club Shadow and Club Rebel.
Both clubs feature some of the premier DJ's on a Saturday night. For club Rebel its DJ Suss One and DJ Executive spinning all flavors of things R&B and Hip Hop and Kevin Crown spinning Caribbean Rhythms on another level. For Club Shadow they usually have WBLS live Party that they simulcast on the radio. This is definitely grown and sexy, we talking late 20's plus who can appreciate a wide range of music be its a mix of dance, R&B, 80's music and Hip Hop with a soulful blend.
Both clubs are spacious and they have a come looking respectable dress code. Sometimes they say ladies must have heels but if you have good looking flats they are letting you in. Hip Hop is a music from the streets but lets be honest they trying to avoid that side of the streets leaking out. Yes by the way if you don't know its going to be primarily people of color but really did you not expect Hip Hop to not have Black and Latins? That's like being surprised a Salsa party has heavy Latin influence.
The reason these two clubs are my top considerations is that they play real Hip Hop for a good audience not this sanitized Top 40 garbage. These DJ's will play Drake, Weezie, Rhihanna, some old Black Moon, Tribe called Quest and then switch to new heat. That's the difference its respected DJ's at good clubs playing real hip hop.
IMPORTANT NOTE: As of early March Club Shadow is closed for just a bit for major renovations but it will be back up by late March.
Club Rebel is located on 251 W. 30th street between 7th and 8th Avenue. That's near the 1,2,3, A,C,E trains at 34th street Penn Station and only a few blocks from the N,Q,R, B, D,F,M trains to Herald Square. This is also close to the Path Train at 33rd St and of course LIRR and NJ Transit to Penn Station.
Club Shadow is located on 229 W. 28th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue's. Basically every train that I just mentioned will get you here too.
