Father's Day is truly about celebrating the positive impact of fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other men who sincerely and seriously take on the roles of child rearing, raising, and mentoring. It is well-documented the absence of a positive male presence can reap adverse consequences and repercussions within the family and community structure.
Another time honored tradition is being able to commune at the dinner table; breaking break, having a conversation, and just enjoying some bonding time can be a productive, positive, and powerful thing. This Sunday, June 15th, the aforementioned come together as part of the annual Real Men Cook (Atlanta) event.
The event takes place from 3-6pm at the Georgia World Congress Center. The centerpiece of the day's activities include men from all walks of life who prepare sample size portions of their favorite dishes, ranging from appetizers, entrees, and desserts.
"The day is a fun-filled food tasting celebration of men on Father's Day. It is a great family-friendly event", notes Diane Larche', director of Real Men Cook-Atlanta. Only the Chicago group (which originated the event) has a larger attendance and draw compared to the Atlanta site.
Outside of sampling some truly delicious and delectable offerings, there is a health fair and a kids zone' for interactive activity (featuring Home Depot). Multiple drawings and door prizes for a wide range of items, including the complete set of the HBO series "Game of Thrones", an autographed Super Soaker by its creator, Dr. Lonnie Johnson, and a hotel stay in the Bahamas, are among the items available for drawing and auction. Cooking demonstrations, including (but not limited to) Chef Duane Nutter (from One Flew South Restaurant at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport), along with appearances by the Atlanta Hawks, are among the other interactive pieces taking place. A complete listing of all sponsors may be found here.
Tickets for the event are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. It is highly recommended that tickets are purchased in advance either online or at any of the partnering ticket outlets. For a complete details, please visit the site.
Each year, the event supports local nonprofits and community-based organizations. This year, the community organizations supported through this year's ticket sales (proceeds) include The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals Aviation Youth Programs, Principles of Manhood (POM), and Real Men Cook Charities.
John Eaves (Fulton County Commission Chairperson), Lentheus Chaney (Publisher of Urban Lux Magazine), Randy E. Rolle (Bahamas Counsul General), and Michael Thurmond (DeKalb County School Superintendent) are among the honorary chairpersons for this year's (Sunday) event. For a complete listing of all of the chairs, judges, and performing artists, readers are encouraged to visit the website.
Mikaya Milan Thurmond (WTVC in Chattanooga, TN) and CBS TV 46's Frank Wiley, Jr. are serving as this year's guest hosts.
Supporting community organizations, providing a family-focused event, and celebrating men who truly invest in their communities are central themes to Real Men Cook and the annual Father's Day event the organization provides. And it doesn't hurt that one's spirit and stomach can get satisfied given the myriad of samples prepared for all.
Take time this Sunday to share and support the community, especially the men who are doing their part in making positive things happen in the places where they live, work, and play.
