When all was said and done the score line was clear and concise Real Salt Lake(11-4-9 42 pts) two goals scored Seattle Sounder FC (13-7-2 41pts) one goal scored. The match between the two top teams in MLS Western Conference lived up to it's pre game hype. You know the immovable force against the indestructible and the best offense vs best defense ect ect. Sounders FC with it's high flying offense was entering the lions den in Real Salt Lake's Rio Tinto Stadium. Going into the game RSL had lost just two games at home this season. Against Sounders FC, RSL home record was 4-1-2)
With top spot in the Western Conference up for grabs both teams left there gloves at the training ground and where ready to rumble Mixed martial arts style. Kicking, striking standing or lying down, what ever it takes to win.
The first half between the Western Conference was a dog fight in which RSL threw everything including the kitchen sink at the Sounders FC defense. " We know it was going to be a tough game and if we could weather the first 30 minutes we would be okay," Sounders FC Lamar Neagle said after the game " They are a very tough team to beat at home."
Despite playing it's third competitive game in six days the Sounders FC strategy of bend don't break worked for the first 45 minutes when the two teams went into the lockeroom deadlocked at 0-0.
After the restart fatigue, character and determination injected themselves into the game. Fatigue joined the Sounders FC which made two costly mistakes in a span of four minutes . RSL forward Joao Plata the shortest player in MLS had his 11th goal of the season when he was unmarked in front of the Sounder FC goal and headed home a free kick by RSL midfielder Luke Mulholland. RSL doubled it's lead four minutes later when Mulholland took matters into his own hands when he slotted a left footed shot into the back of the Seattle net.
" That first goal was the one that took the steam out of us, when you are tired and playing your third game in six days it takes the air out of your ballon," Sounders FC Coach Sigi Scmid said after the game.
Character and pride did make an appearance for Sounders FC when Chad Barrett cut the deficit to one goal in the 73rd minute. But character and pride where no match that had determination on it's side." We were really up for it. We were excited for the game and we felt like this was a huge opportunity that we earned," RSL Midfielder Kyle Beckermann said
While they may have temporary lost their position as the top MLS Sounders FC can relish in the fact that they are just one point behind Sporting KC (12-6-6 42pts) and RSL11-4-9 42pts) with two games in hand. The Sounders next game will be wednesday vs San Jose at the X box pitch at Century Link Field in Seattle.
