'Real Housewives of Atlanta' star NeNe Leakes goes ‘Dancing’

The cast for the 18th season of “Dancing with the Stars” was unveiled on ABC’s “Good Morning America” last week. This season’s cast of the celebs are as with previous seasons very diverse; ranging from recently awarded gold medalists at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, a reality TV star, professional hockey player, to a daytime game show host. NeNe Leakes the breakout star of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” was revealed to be one of the stars in this season’s cast. Leakes previously appeared in the seventh season of “The Celebrity Apprentice” where she engaged in the infamous feud with former “The View” host Star Jones and she was featured in the Ryan Murphy sitcom “The New Normal;” both of which aired on NBC. In her latest project Leakes will have will have to learn the fundamentals of ballroom dancing with help of a professional partner. It will be interesting to see if any of her “Housewives” cast members will fly out to Los Angeles to support her?

Other celebs joining Leakes includes; funnyman Drew Carey the current host of the CBS daytime game show “The Price is Right”. Carey will be steeping out onto the dance floor partnered with professional dancer Cheryl Burke. Hockey maverick Sean Avery will be waltzing on “DWTS” this season. The retired Red Wings player and activist has been busy working for an ad agency since leaving the NHL. Avery will get his dance on with Karina Smirnoff.

2014 Winter Olympic gold medalists Charlie White and his ice partner Meryl Davis be dancing without skates. The duo clinched the first place title in Sochi in Ice Dancing for Team USA just a few weeks ago. White and Davis will compete separately with professional dance partners Sharna Burgess and Maksim Chmerkovskiy respectively. The Paralympics are winding down in Sochi, however Amy Purdy just won the first bronze medal for Paralympic snowboarding. She’lll get the chance to glide across the dance floor with her dance partner Derek Hough.

Generations of sci-fi fans know him from “Star Wars” as Lando Calrissian; others may know him best as Diana Ross’ co-star in “Lady Sings the Blues”. Actor Billy Dee Williams will be partnered Emma Slater. Big Time Rush member James Maslow partners with Peta Murgatroyd. Actress and New York Times bestselling author Candace Cameron Bure with be paired with Mark Ballas. Former child actor from the TV series “The Wonder Years;” Danica McKellar partners with Val Chmerkovskiy. Internet sensation Cody Simpson his trying his hand at ballroom dancing. Simpson will be paired with “DWTS” newbie Witney Carson. Determined swimmer Diana Nyad rounds out this season’s cast. Nyad garnered fame after successfully swimming over 100 miles from Cuba to Florida setting a record after four failed attempts. Nyad will dance with Henry Byalikov.

The 18th season of “Dancing with the Stars” kicks off on Monday March 17 at 8 p.m. on ABC, WSB-TV in Atlanta, Comcast channel 3/803.
