Lead-based paint was in widespread use before 1978 and poses a risk to homeowners and their families and pets. Federal law requires that in any real estate transaction involving the sale of a home that was built before 1978 the seller disclose this to the buyer in writing. It also requires disclosure to the tenant in a rental property.
The EPA requires that their booklet be given to and read by the buyer, and that their form be filled out and signed by both seller and buyer.
