Today, it Nyon, Switzerland, UEFA, via Luis Figo, drew its Champions League semifinals pairings--Real Madrid drew Bayern Munich while Atletico Madrid drew Chelsea. After the home and away semis series, the Champions final will be played at Benfica's Estadio do Sport in Lisbon, Portugal.
The ceremony also included the pairings in the Europa League semifinals and Ciro Ferrara pulled the balls out of the bowls drawing Sevilla FC against Valencia CF, and SL Benfica against Juventus. The Europa finals will be played at Juventus Stadium, in Turin, Italy.
After the Europa pairings were announced the immediate reaction in the small, packed auditorium, was one of anticipatory jubilation as the possibility of the Spanish opponents making it an all Spain finals disappeared leaving the wider appeal of a two country final.
After the Champions League draw, the assembled football dignitaries and representatives seemed just as excited by the pairings but it seemed more muted as the two strongest teams would meet at the earliest possible moment. For the Spanish delegation, the possibility of an all-Spanish Champions League finals was greeted with muted jubilation as the road to that day seemed a tough one.
Real and Bayern have met many times before and five times in the semifinals. The Germans have won four out of five of those meetings. Chelsea and Atletico have met less often splitting results with a win a piece and one tie.
