REAGAN’S STATEMENT OF CHILDHOOD RACISM
I remember as a very young man when Reagan ran against Jimmy Carter. He said something like, “When I was a child, we didn’t even know there was racism. All race baiters begin to say that he was telling the south that he will bring back Jim Crow. I remember saying to an older gentleman, “I cannot understand how Reagan could say that.” I was surprised when he said something to the effect, “Bill when I was a child and before, the white and black kids used to go to school together down in Snow Lake Arkansas. We didn’t know anything about Racism either. Most was what people called white trash and we all pretty much lived and worked together in Snow Lake.” Personally, I never knew anything like that happened and I was raised most of my child hood within about 15 miles of Snow Lake. He told me much about a time I knew nothing about and would never have guessed. I knew about the now famous 1918 Elaine race riots but this was something fascinating! I am therefore confident that what Phil Robertson said is completely possible and happened in a number of places. People are playing political games to gain more power over others.
It is too bad that there are people who would destroy the legacy of one of our best presidents. Most people seem to agree that Ronald Reagan was exactly that. So it is rather a small matter for those same people to truly misunderstand all the ins and outs of a prior generation and even think that everyone was not bad in the south back then. The idea that there were neighbors in certain areas who all went to school together and acted like equals does not fit the political narrative than have been found so useful.
