“Happy Holidays! Oh Happy Holidays.. May…” well, you get the idea. Just a couple weeks until the big day of giving, love and sharing… well, that’s what we are planning… Wine may well, go well with this! It does! What do you have planned? Is there room for the savoring of your favorite wine? AND, since it is also the season of “Let’s make a Deal,” getting a great price brings smiles, true any time of the year!

This week is a more complete listing. No surprise since the next two weeks are the biggest sales days for local wine shops… well, that’s what we think; yes, we are sticking with it.

Wine Shop Basics

Okay, for those of you who are, well, finally take the big step of “tasting wine” before buying it… here’s a video on the basics. Best practice: go with friends, and ignore their recommendations… they are the experts on their own taste; you are the expert on yours… but the company does add to the experience; wine is about sharing. J

Now, look over the list. Locations are metro region wide, so that excuse about it being too far to taste wine, is gone. GONE!. Now contact those friends and decide where to meet (see below) and taste wine, while finding the deal on your favorite to secure to more private festivities!

Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Pinot Noir & Bubbles!

Drop by today, 12/13/13

To taste and preview the soon-to-arrive 2004 Galet-des-Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes along with a few other selections!

A holiday tradition!! This is the 3rd library selection that we've offered of the Vieilles Vignes. Many of you have enjoyed the 2001 and 2005, this time we're going back to offer the delectable and soon to be legendary 2004 Vieilles Vignes from Galet-des-Papes, one of our favorite producers in this hallowed region.
It isn't too often that we are able to sample these before purchasing but today is an exception, we have some sample bottles for you all to look at. On to the wine…2004 was one of the big sleeper vintages of the past decade. The Vieilles Vignes cuvee is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah from vines ranging from 60-100+ year old vines. Old vine magic aromas are omni-present and present complex, secondary aspects. Quasi Barolo/Bandol influences lie beneath the Grenache overlay of ardent strawberry, virtual Chinese 5-spice, truffle, white pepper and rhubarb. Complex scents of violet, pekoe and camphor also ride shotgun. In the mouth it is drinking exquisitely. Smoothly textured, impressive mid-palate presence and really fanning out on the energetic, spice-laden, drawn-out finish that seemingly lasts and lasts. Drink this with a myriad of food selections. Try with game meats like venison or elk but it will also do quite well with duck, a hearty daube de boeuf (a provencal stew) or soft-ripened cheeses.

Ravishing Rhone Reds!!

“For some reason this new French Santa just lacks the whimsical romanticism of the Santa I remember…
Memo to French parents: leave a spot in the driveway for old St. Nick. And we all thought the French were such hidebound traditionalists. Luckily, in things that matter most to us here on the corner of SE 28th, they are. This will be proven very evident when we pull corks on deliciously traditional Rhone Valley bottles that will be most happy to accompany your upcoming holiday dinners. “With their earthy complexities and rich, soulful flavors they also happen to be just the thing to ward off winter’s chill. Add in the fact that the glorious Provençal countryside is one of my two favorite places to drink from (and visit) in this wide world of wine, then we have all the makings of an incredibly satisfying night of wine. As always I have to add that for the money these are also among the world’s greatest bang-for-the-buck bottles. The bonus Chateauneufs for less than $40 a bottle simply blow away almost any other similarly priced bottles from anywhere! There will be winemaking genius in abundance for your sipping pleasure tomorrow, and much Joyeaux Noel to be had with these….

-2011 CLOS DES LUMIERES Cotes du Rhone $9.95…thé new vintage of one of our best sellers the last 3 years does not disappoint!
-2011 MICHEL CHAPOUTIES Luberon “la Ciboise” $12.95
-2010 DOMAINE DE LA GUICHARDE Massif d’Uchaux “Cuvée Genest”$14.95…I think the name of this wine is how the French spell “steal”! 90 its-Wine Spectator
-2010 ALAIN JAUME Cotes du Rhone “Hauts de Brun” $18.95
-2010 NOTRE DAME DES PALLIERS Gigondas $19.95…still easily the best Gigondas for the $$ in our market!
And do I even need to tell you how good it gets in bonus land….
Bonus #1-2011 ALAIN BOISSON Cairanne “Cros de Romet” $23.95…We’ve been happily carrying this wine since the ’04 vintage and a few bottles inevitably find their way into my basement each year. 90 pts-Wine Advocate & Wine Spectator
Bonus #2-2010 JEAN DEYDIER Chateauneuf du Pape $39.95…93 pts-Wine Spectator; 91 pts-Wine Advocate
Bonus #3-2010 DOMAINE CHANTE CIGALE Chateauneuf du Pape $39.95…91 ptys-Wine Spectator; 94 pts-Wine Advocate: “Chante Cigale’s 2010s may be the finest wines I have ever tasted from this estate. A traditional blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre and Cinsault from 50-year-old vines aged in a combination of concrete tanks, old wood foudres and small old barrels. It displays notes of charcuterie, roasted meats, garrigue, kirsch and black currants along with a full-bodied, seriously endowed, super-concentrated mouthfeel that builds like a skyscraper in the mouth. This cuvee possesses remarkable density and richness as well as the potential to last 20 years.”

Both these last two CdP’s are staggeringly good and absolutely not to be missed! I’ve got ‘em both in my basement and can’t wait for the update tomorrow. I’m telling you this is going to be a knockout tasting. The amour du vin will flow from 4:30-8:00 and you can have your taste of the first five for the usual ten dollars, and the bonuses for a bit more. Please bring along cheese and other snacks to enhance the goodness on display, and if you can rustle up a few friends all the better. See you here for a few of my favorite things!!
