The USS Midway is a must-see for visitors to San Diego. Located on the bay front in downtown San Diego, this museum has 60 exhibits and 29 restored aircraft onboard. It is called the City at Sea for a good reason: during its military service, it housed nearly 5,000 crew and would be at sea for sometimes months at a time.
How much time will you need? The museum opens at 10 am and the self guided tour will take between 4 - 5 hours. Also on board are museum docents, where they will take you through what it was like to live aboard the ship, fly aircrafts onto the ship, or launch aircrafts off the ship. Yes, these are retired military servicemen and are speaking from first hand experience.
What will you see on board? You will be able to see where the crew ate, slept, showered, and worked, as well as go up to the "Island" where aircraft traffic was monitored, into the captain and admiral's quarters, and onto the flight deck itself, where you are able to see, and for some, climb aboard, the aircraft located on deck.
Self guided tour and docents: The self-guided tour is narrated by Midway sailors who lived and worked on the Midway. There are specific tour narrations for kids (and adults can learn something too). The docents are situated around the ship and can answer questions, provide great accounts and stories, and help provide a great picture of what it was like to serve on a ship like the USS Midway. You will also learn how these ships navigated without the technology we use today, and how advances helped redefine ships like the USS Midway and the aircrafts on board.
Other attractions: There are a couple of flight simulator choices on board, if you are interested in learning about how an aviator took off and landed on a moving target. Also, construction has begun on a Midway theatre that will have a multi-media show on the battle of the Midway.
Have fun, learn about history, and experience all that the USS Midway has to offer.
