Though there is still a mass of snow on the ground, spring is here and that means the Cook Inlet Conference prep soccer season has begun. The first outdoor games are scheduled for April 12, but until then The Dome must suffice.
After one week of indoor play, it appears some teams are more ready than others, as there have been numerous blowouts. Defending state girls champion South has already pitched a couple of shutouts behind goalie Michelle Cole, most recently stomping West 7-0 on Saturday. Kayla Sims produced a hat trick in the win.
The Dimond girls lost to South in the state final last season, but appear poised to make another run toward a title shot after an 8-0 blowout of Bartlett on Saturday. A hat trick wasn't quite good enough for Bobbye Pendleton, who notched four goals for the Lynx.
This season's first meeting between Dimond and South is scheduled for April 16 at South.
Anyone looking for a good indoor match might want to attend the boys showdown between Service and South on Thursday at The Dome. South was runner-up to Juneau in last season's state tournament and hasn't given up a goal in 1-0-1 start this season. Service is 2-0 after ripping Eagle River 9-0 on Saturday.
