After serving as head coach with Reading United since 2008, Brendan Burke has taken on a larger role with the Philadelphia Union. Because of the larger role, Reading United announced David Castellanos as their new head coach on Saturday.
David Castellanos is best known for playing with the Philadelphia Kixx from 2005 until they ceased to exist in 2010. Currently, Castellanos coaches for both PSU-Abington Mens' Soccer team and Continental FC Delco Academy.
According to Reading United's press release, Castellanos will assume the head coaching position starting Jan. 1 and will be present at the teams' open tryouts on Dec. 30.
"I am extremely excited to be part of a club with such great tradition as Reading. I look forward to this great opportunity and to a successful season with continued wins", stated Castellanos.
Castellanos has some big shoes to fill. During Burke's tenure, the former Reading coach lead the team to two USL-PDL Final Four appearances and the 2009 regular season championship. In addition, Reading reached the third round of the 2013 U.S. Open Cup where they took on NY Red Bulls, which was the farthest the squad ever advanced in the tournament.
As Burke moves on from Reading and into a more involved role with the Union, a new era starts for Reading. With 2014 right on the corner, Summer and the 2014 Reading United season will be here soon, and further announcements about player signings, assistant coaches, etc. will be announced in the near future.
