Reading school district to provide free meals

Nutrition is important. There is no doubt about that. Studies also found that students learn better when they are well fed and not hungry. In the past only some students were able to get free lunches and breakfast at school. Yet, some fell through the cracks. I am happy to see that this will no longer be an issue at Reading School District. They are providing free meals to students. See below for the changes that are being made:

1. All elementary students in the Reading School District will participate in a new program called Breakfast in the Classroom. They will receive a FREE breakfast at the start of the school day (if they choose) and will eat at their desks during the first 10 minutes of class each day. For elementary school students, breakfast will no longer be served before school. School will now begin promptly at 8:30 a.m.

2. A FREE breakfast will be served to all middle, intermediate and high school students before school. At the middle school level, breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. At the intermediate and high school level, breakfast will be served at 7:15 a.m. Vo-Tech students can receive a breakfast at Reading High School before their bus departs or at RMCTC at 7:50 a.m.

3. All students in the Reading School District will now receive a free lunch every school day. The provided meal will be what is listed on monthly school lunch menus. A la carte foods, snacks and additional drinks are also available, however, students must pay to purchase them. Students are also allowed to pack a lunch if they choose.

Other districts may have similar projects. Ask Student Service, Guidance, or a teacher for more details. Everyone needs help and the goal is to keep kids fed so they can learn better.
