Ivan Zenaty Joins Violin Faculty

Accepting Students for 2012

CIM is pleased to announce the appointment of esteemed violinist and teacher Mr. Ivan Zenaty to the faculty, beginning fall 2012. CIM will accept late applications for students wishing to study with
Mr. Zenaty.

"A rigorous and thoughtful process resulted in the unanimous opinion of CIM's violin faculty that Ivan Zenaty possesses the special gifts violinistically, pedagogically, musically and personally that suit the musical philosophy and historical excellence of CIM's faculty and students, and its uniquely supportive environment," said President Smirnoff.

Mr. Zenaty has been a professor of music at the Dresdent Hochsule for the past 15 years, he has appeared as a soloist with numerous European orchestras and has made many recordings. He studied with the eminent Czech violinist Josef Suk, grandson of composer Antonin Dvorák.

This announcement follows the recent announcement that Jaime Laredo and his wife, cellist Sharon Robinson, also will be joining CIM for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Kennedy Center Conservatory Project

Listen Live

February 22

On February 22 at 6:00 p.m., CIM students will perform as part of The Conservatory Project at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. for the eighth consecutive year. Their performance will be streamed live on kennedy-center.org. (Past performances are also archived on the site.)

The Conservatory Project began in 2004 as part of the Kennedy Center's Performing Arts for Everyone initiative and aims to develop and present young talent from the nation's leading conservatories. D.C. audiences are introduced to young performers with extraordinary talent in classical instrumentation, vocals, jazz, musical theater and opera - the next generation of professional musicians.

CIM representatives include collaborative pianist Samantha Biniker (student of Anita Pontremoli), violist Tegen Davidge (student of Jeffrey Irvine), clarinetist Nikola Djurica (student of Franklin Cohen), trumpeter Kyle Dobbeck (student of Michael Sachs), mezzo-soprano Samantha Renea Gossard (student of Vinson Cole) and violinist Natalie Lin (student of Paul Kantor.)

CIM's Preparatory division is also represented by Young Artist Brandon Garbot (violin student of William Preucil.)

This year, 17 conservatories and music schools will participate in the Project, including The Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, Eastman School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music. Each participating school is responsible for selecting performers and 60 minutes of programming for their evening. The format is designed to distinguish each institution by allowing them to select and feature talented students who are ready for the exposure and experience provided by this opportunity.

Be sure to tune in to the CIM performances on Feb. 22!

360° of Sight & Sound

The Planetarium Project

February 23

CIM has joined forces with the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History on February 23 for a stellar event - the debut of "360° of Sight & Sound: The Plantetarium Project."

In the spirit of collaboration, students from both institutions paired up to create contemporary 360° films to be premiered to the public on the state-of-the-art Planetarium dome at CMNH.

The Project has been in the works for more than two years - before CMNH's Planetarium upgrade was even complete.

Dr. Keith Fitch, CIM's head of composition, explains "Steve Kohn (head of CIM's electronic music studio) and I strongly believe that students need to have as many tools as possible in their compositional toolbox to take advantage of any opportunity that may present itself when they leave CIM. The ability to collaborate with artists in other disciplines is an important one of those tools."

Creating the films and scores for 360° presentation adds an exciting and challenging element for the students.

"It's a step up for all of us," said composer Chris Zajac, a master's student of Dr. Fitch. "It's not a flat sound or flat view. It's a whole other world creatively."

Following the public premieres on February 23 at 8:15 p.m., the final films with their original CIM scores will be submitted to DomeFest - a juried exhibit that spotlights technology, art and music in domed theaters.

Tickets are $10. Call CMNH at 216.231.4600 for reservations.

Hänsel & Gretel Harvest for Hunger Food Drive
February 22 through March 5

CIM students will be giving more than an outstanding performance with the CIM Opera Theater presents Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel & Gretel later this month. The students, as well as faculty, staff and CIM guests, will be joining the fight against hunger in Northeastern Ohio.

Hänsel & Gretel, both the story by the Brothers Grimm and the opera by Humperdinck, begins with a family struggling with hunger in lean economic times. Unfortunately, too many people today are trying to cope with this same issue. For one in six Americans, hunger is very real. According Feeding America, the nation's leading hunger-relief charity, 16.4% of Ohio households are dealing with hunger (aka food insecurity)-making it one of nine states with a higher rate of food insecurity than the national average.

Inspired by the story and motivated by a desire to help its neighbors, CIM is partnering with the Cleveland Foodbank in the fight against hunger in our own community by participating in the 2012 Harvest for Hunger food drive. The institution has set an ambitious goal to collect 2,012 non-perishable food and household items for the 2012 drive (2,012 for 2012), while also helping raise awareness about food insecurity in Ohio and beyond. Opera patrons are encouraged to join CIM by bringing non-perishable food items to donate with them when they attend a performance of Hänsel & Gretel.

Of course, everyone is invited to participate in the food drive, and CIM hopes its neighbors in University Circle will participate en masse. The school will begin accepting non-perishable food donations via a collection bin in Pogue Lobby at the school's East Boulevard entrance on Wednesday, February 22 - when The Cleveland Foodbank launches its 2012 Harvest for Hunger campaign and prior to the opera's premiere (February 29) - and will extend the collection through Monday, March 5.
