When it comes to lipless crankbaits you have to practice your cast and technique if you are not having the luck with it you would like to. The other thing is having the right lipless crankbait. Does it rattle, is the wobble tight, does it sink head first or horizontally?
The first vibrating lure was the Heddon Sonic lipless and it was smaller than the crankbaits of today. Now, every lure company makes one, they make noise and the noise varies between brands. So yes, it pays to have more than one crankbait brand of crankbait, for those of you that got Valentines Day money or gift certificates to spend at Atlanta Bass Pro Shop or Sports Academy.
Lipless crankbaits are the ones to fish with in cold water below 50 degrees. It is a dropping bait that can trigger strikes you cant get with the slower rigs. That doesn't mean you need to fish it fast. Weighting down the nose, drilling by the nose between the eyes and putting in some weighted material, to make them fall harder and look like a baitfish would, on beds and ledges.
Ken Chaumont, Rat-L-Trap, takes the rear hook off and putting a spinnerbait blade in its place. It is supposed to give the lure lift to be fished over shallow areas, leaving the tail wagging up with the nose on the bottom. Wobbling it tightly, back on retrive.
For 1/4 ounce baits don't use line over 10-pound test, for 1/2 ouncelure dont go over 16-pound test, it weighs down the action.
