Read “Dying for a Dance” by Cindy Sample

“Dying for a Dance,” the second book in the Laurel McKay Mystery series has been nominated for a Lefty Award.  The Lefty is awarded by the Left Coast Crime for the best humorous mystery novel of the year.

Cindy Sample started reading at age 4 and by third grade decided that she wanted to be like Nancy Drew when she grew up.  Instead she became the CEO of a National Company and a Motivational Speaker.  Cindy is also a former columnist for the Gold River Community Newspaper.  She is a past president of the Sacramento Chapter of Sisters in Crime and co-chair of the Left Coast Crime Convention which will be held in Sacramento March 29 – April 1.

Active in her community, Cindy has served on the boards of the California Mortgage Bankers Association, the Sacramento Opera, the YWCA, and on the National Kidney Foundation Annual Authors Luncheon committee.   Part of the proceeds from “Dying for a Dance” will be donated to the Rancho Cordova Soroptimist Club.

Cindy also takes ballroom dancing lessons.  See the video of her dance instructor at the book launch party.

As the book opens Laurel McKay, a single mother, is taking dance lessons for a foxtrot routine for her best friend’s wedding.  As she struggles with the dance in class, she crashes into a pair of dancers and breaks the heel of her new dance shoes.  Later that night as she leaves frustrated with dancing, she stumbles over one of the instructors - dead with the heel of her broken shoe in his mouth.

We follow along with the twists and turns of the plot as Laurel searches for the killer among the students and professionals at the dance studio.  Laurel continues to practice the dance for the wedding which will be held in Lake Tahoe. Coincidently this is also the site of the ballroom competition where many from the dance studio will be competing.

Weddings, dancing and a mystery - what’s not to love about this book?  “Dying for a Dance” offers all of the elements of an excellent cozy mystery.  The characters, the plot, the setting were all interesting.  The writing was fast paced.  I struggled to figure out what it was that stood out that made me really enjoy the book and I decided it was the tone.  It is a feel-good book, it makes you smile.  It almost makes you want to take ballroom dance classes too.

Five Stars out of Five.
