Re-Purposing, Up-Cycling, Where to Get Cheap Materials for your Projects

Some people may say my garage is a mess, but I think it is a creative wonderland. Whenever I am wanting to make something decorative or functional, I can always find what I need in my garage. Yes, I am a pack rat, and Yes, I collect used items. I have been creating things from junk since I was a kid. Now it has a cool title "Re-purposing."

I have made things like end-tables, Dressers, Tables and more using items that were once used for other things. In this article I will tell you good places to get items to stock your garage or shed so that you always have what you need on hand.

One of the places that I really love is the Habitat for Humanity Restore. It has a little of everything! They have paint, screws, decorative items, siding, doors, and much more. Sometimes you can negotiate a price. I have a bucket of hardware and hinges that I purchased for three dollars. Another place, yes you guessed it, Goodwill. Talk about a little of everything! They have wallpaper, craft supplies, photo paper, and also decor items that you can update. I like getting pictures there to use the frames. You can get some very nice frames for around a dollar or two verses department store prices of twenty dollars.

Another place is yard sales. At the end sometimes you can get a variety of items for a lump sum. Clearance isles cannot be counted out either. I have gotten some great sheets of tile in the clearance isle that is waiting (in my garage) for my bathroom remodel.

In my college sociology class, they taught us that our ancestors were hunters and gatherers. The males were hunters and the females were the gatherers. I don't know about that because when it comes to getting materials to re-purpose, I am quite a hunter! I love to dig through the boxes and shelves and find that great bargain. I made a Betty Boop Collage out of a ceiling light cover.

If you have any great ideas or great places for items to re-purpose. Please share!
