Here we are the beginning of March, how many of you are still on track with your New Year Resolutions or goals you set at the beginning of the year? How many of you actually remember what they were? Remember those hazy declarations made with such ferver and zeal just a few months ago? Now is the time to re-examine them and see how they are fitting with your life right now, if you need to adjust them a bit, re-ignite the fire that started them, or just plain scrap them and make new ones.
Recently I developed an illness that had me sidelined for over 7 days. I could barely muster enough energy to get to the kitchen so my usual 3 miles plus lifting plus daily requirement of burpees was completely out of the question. This initial setback of my steady march toward my year goal of 15,000 burpees was devastating. I could only think of the time lost, the daily averages plummeting like a skydiver in a freefall but then I re-evaluated. I took the time to look at my goal, this one and many others, and ask some very important questions:
- How does this goal fit into my life as a whole?
- Why did I set this goal initially? Is this still relevant?
- How should I change my goal (make it harder, easier, different) if at all in order to give me more motivation moving forward?
- How far have I come from when I started this journey?
Asking these questions helped me to refocus my energy and realize this was not a sprint I am on. These goals I have set are not to be fulfilled overnight, over a fortnight, or even by Summer. They are part of the marathon of life and the overarching goal of my existence which is to improve myself daily and always strive to be better today then I was yesterday.
Re-evaluate your goals, establish new ones, and improve every day!
