The Fortress of Freedom, The Establishment of Mose Heritage Event will attract history buffs and those interested in experiencing the re-enactment of this important event in Florida's past. On March 22, 2014, Florida Living History, Inc. in partnership with Fort Mose Historic State Park and the Fort Mose Historical Society will commemorate the 276th anniversary of the establishment of El Pueblo de Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose ("Fort mo-SAY") as the first, legally sanctioned free black settlement in the continental U.S. in March 1738.

Included in the day's activities is a re-enactment of Governor Montiano reading his proclamation to residents of San Agustin and the future residents of newly founded Fort Mose and the naming of Capitan Menendez as the settlement's leader. The 1693 proclamation by Spain's King Carlos II granting the black refugees fleeing slavery in the Carolinas and Georgia to freedom in Spanish Florida and the letter from Governor Montiano in 1740 to Spain's King Felipe V which discussed the establishment of Fort Mose will be on display. Governor Montiano's letter described the role the free black militia played defending St.Augustine from the 1740 British invasion of Spanish Florida.

The Fortress of Freedom heritage event will include:

  • Period musket and artillery demonstrations
  • Period foodway demonstrations
  • A lecture on "Why Gracia Real Santa Teresa de Mose?" by Dr. J. Michael Francis at 2:00 p.m.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Fort Mose Historic State Park in St. Augustine. Entrance to the park and event is free, however there is a $2.00 entrance fee to the museum. For more information visit the state park website.
