The Tampa Bay Rays (83-68) won a huge game on Wednesday night in walkoff fashion with Chris Archer on the mound against the Texas Rangers (82-69). Everybody knows how big this series is with the Rangers as the Rays were tied for that final wild card spot entering into Wednesday night’s game. Archer gave up two runs early but the Rays rallied with a Sean Rodriguez two-run clutch shot to tie it in the sixth. It remained tied 2-2 until the 11th inning when some real lazy play by Wil Myers allowed them to score and take the lead 3-2. But again the Rays answered with a David DeJesus single to tie it 3-3 after some crafty base running. In the 12th the Rays got out of a big jam in the top half of the inning and then finally got the walkoff hit by Desmond Jennings to win it 4-3 by scoring Sam Fuld after a leadoff hit by Jose Lobaton. This was a total team win and crazy game of baseball as it went back and forth so hopefully this win can really pump up this team and drive them to victory for the rest of the eleven games.
On Tuesday Jeremy Hellickson was bad from the get go giving up five early runs and the Rays fell 7-1. Then on Monday Alex Cobb gave the Rays just what they needed in a huge victory. He pitched into the ninth inning and was outstanding as Tampa Bay won 6-2 behind the bat of Wil Myers with a home run and a couple more RBIs.
Tampa Bay dropped the final game on Sunday vs the Twins (65-86) due to bullpen problems once again but was still able to take the series as they won 7-0 and 3-0 on Friday and Saturday. After Tampa Bay took care of business in Minnesota last weekend against the Twins they now look to at least split and hopefully win the series vs the Texas Rangers at home on Thursday. The Rays are a much better team at home (47-29) as this is why it is important to win this game on Thursday as Matt Moore will take the hill.
This weekend they will welcome in the Baltimore Orioles (81-70) into the Trop so be sure to come out and support your Rays. Baltimore is just two games back of that final wild card spot. All Rays’ fans will be watching the Cleveland Indians (82-70) as they are just a 1.5 game back as well. The Rays just must keep winning as they are looking good for the game 163 if it comes down to that as it will be home at Tropicana Field if they win on Thursday vs the Rangers. Right now the Rays are one up on the Rangers for first in the wild card. They have to head to New York (80-72) and Toronto (69-82) to finish up the season. It is going to be a wild race all the way to the end in this hunt for October.
