Browse the Twitter and Facebook pages of the most well-known ministry leaders in the world and what you’ll find is a lot of love from the Christian community. One thing you won’t find too often are Atheists, unless of course, you visit the Facebook or Twitter page of evangelist Ray Comfort—Atheists cannot get enough of him.
The New Zealand born street evangelist has authored over sixty books including; ‘Hell’s Best Kept Secret,’ ‘Why God Doesn’t Believe in Atheists,’ ‘Revivals Golden Key,’ and ‘You Can Lead an Atheist to Evidence, but You Can’t Make Him Think’. Comfort is well known by the Atheist community and there’s just something about this funny, witty, Jewish street preacher that has Atheists coming in droves to his Facebook page.
Five months ago on March 2nd I wrote an article called ‘Ray Comfort Recruits Christians to Battle Atheists on Facebook.’ At that time Comfort’s Facebook page had just over 113,000 followers and that’s not bad considering the ‘birth date’ of Comfort’s page was only two years earlier on April 10, 2010. Now, only five months later, Ray Comfort’s page has over doubled what it took two years to do--sitting at just over 264,300 followers. Most of these interactions and conversations are from Atheists, not Christians.
In 2007 Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron were invited by Night Line to debate the existence of God with the RRS, and more recently Comfort appeared on ‘The Atheist Experience’ in a debate with Matt Dillahunty and Russell Glasser, hosts of an Austin based Atheist web show. It was around this time that Comfort recalls;
"It suddenly dawned on me how Facebook is an incredible medium for the gospel. One of my posts was seen by 1.2 million people – many of whom are non-Christians," Comfort told The Christian Post via an email exchange. "Think of what it would cost and how much work it would take to have a Billy Graham-type crusade that reached 1.2 million people. But we can reach that many at no cost and with just a click of a keyboard button."
Although Comfort’s Facebook and Twitter Page are constantly bombarded with angry and sarcastic comments from Atheists and ‘ex-Christians’, the proof is in the comments and constant traffic flow back to Comfort’s page. Atheists just can’t get enough of Ray Comfort; they just keep coming back for more day after day, and that’s just what Comfort wants.
In a post written to ‘Mr. Atheist’, Comfort shares that his motivation to continue reasoning with Atheists comes from a conviction for their souls that ‘horrifies’ him;
“I have everlasting life through faith in Jesus, and He is the source of life--"Christ in you the hope of glory." We have "treasure in earthen vessels." Now Mr. Atheist, what do you have that is worth dying for? You have nothing but a precious life that is daily escaping from you like water dripping though cupped hands in a dry desert. You will end up with nothing but death and damnation, and that horrifies me. Christians love you enough to warn you to stop your battle against God, turn from sin and surrender to Him so that you might live.” -Facebook/RayComfort
Ray Comfort is an evangelist who not only believes and teaches the importance of Christians devoting themselves to fulfill the Great Commission by ‘going into all the world’ but he lives, interacts, and has made himself available to that world every single day. In fact, in an email interview with the Christian Post Comfort shares how he provokes conversations with Atheists for the purpose of sharing the gospel;
“It's also important to know that I deliberately create a 'buzz.' I say things like 'Evolution stands in the way of the science of discovery, summed up in Einstein's 'I want to know how God created this world.' This brings them out in force, and gives us an opportunity to give sensible and biblical answers to their questions and objections."
Some of Ray Comfort’s deliberate ‘Buzz-creating’ posts:
“When the Bible describes the state of the ungodly it doesn’t simply speak of ignorance. It speaks of willful ignorance. End the ignorance. www.NeedGod.com”
“The nation that snuffs out the light of God’s Word will find itself floundering in gross darkness. Turn on the lights. www.evolutionvsgod.com”
“Those who reject the simplicity of child-like faith in God read the Bible with blind eyes and listen to the Gospel with deaf ears.”
“If you love death and want to end up in Hell, do nothing; simply stay in your sins. Eternal Justice will eventually come to you.”
In a recent post Comfort stated:
“The tragedy of sin is epitomized by the biblical words, "The world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not." Do you know God? Do you recognize His fingerprints all over Creation? -> www.evolutionvsGod.com”
Within seconds comments and hecklers began to flood his page in response;
A.M., “Praise Jesus! Science is for fools. If evolution is real than why do lesbians still have legs??”
B.C.R., “Christian fundamentalism inches even further beyond the fringes of society.”
E.P., “Ray is a cracker jack…”
M.S., “Ray Comfort is getting crazier by the day”
A.M., “It's true, not one Christian has been able to tell me how the Westboro folks are misinterpreting the Bible.”
B.V.A., “Maybe it is because we don't care what they think.”
M.S., “@Amanda - let's take it one step further - not one Christian has been able to provide scientific proof that the bible is accurate, so, asking them for that type of information is not likely to get you far...”
P.B.B., “Why don't you Bart? According to them you're going to hell. Who's to say they're wrong? They seem to know alot more about the Bible than you.”
C.W.S., “Oh and yes we have explained the Westboro bologna! It is not out of Love that they do those things it is out of ungodliness and pride! I Corinthians 13:13 says it all”
E.S., “Oh good. So you've cherry picked the pretty parts of the bible that don't deal with stoning people to death for little or no offenses. Good for you Crystal.”
Although several Atheists say that they don’t ‘Like’ Ray’s page, and that being on it is a waste of time they’re quick to comment as soon as Comfort leaves his next post and the only rule that Comfort requires to join the conversations: No Cussing Or Blasphemy.
