Raw video shows Chile tsunami in Dichato following earthquake (photos, videos)
The 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the coast of Chile on February 27, 2010 has spawned over 100 aftershocks and sparked a deadly tsunami that killed approximately 300 people. The current Chile earthquake death toll is at 802 and that number is expected to rise. As aftershocks continue (and several experts have indicated they may continue for several months) tsunami warnings and false alarms continue to sound. Yesterday, residents in Chile ran panicked as another tsunami warning was underway.

The following raw video footage was filmed by Jaime Vera, a twenty-year-old Dichato resident who had his cell phone camera ready as the violent waves pushed debris through the town. Waves as high as 15’ swept over the village leaving mass destruction in its wake. The video was obtained by the UK publication The Daily Telegraph . The tsunami destroyed Jaime Vera’s home along with many others in the seaside village.
Damage in Chile has been great, however when compared to those who lost their lives in Haiti, it can be said that Chile’s earthquake preparedness plans were successful. Though 802 is a large death toll, it pales in comparison to the 200,000 residents of Haiti that perished in the earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010.
The following slideshow contains pictures from the damage caused by the Chile tsunami.
