Modern pet food is a far cry from what our animals are designed to eat and thrive on. Those dry, brown pellets that you pour into your dog’s bowl are so highly processed that even the highest quality brands on the market can cause digestive complications for your pet.
The digestive tract’s internal environment is meant to be a balanced population of bacteria, enzymes and other microorganisms that work together in harmony to facilitate digestion and absorption of nutrients and also protect your body from harmful toxins (immune function).
Perhaps you’ve heard the term “good bacteria”? Good bacteria has many important roles in digestion and our pets need a healthy population of “good bacteria” for immune function and digestive health. Did you know that good bacteria actually identifies toxins that enter the body through the digestive tract and prevent them from entering the bloodstream? Large molecules that are toxic to the body get surrounded by the good bacteria and are essentially escorted through the body and eliminated. They are like your stomach’s ‘bouncers’, checking ID’s at the door and weeding out trouble-makers, like E-Coli and Salmonella.
The lack of raw, fresh food in the modern pet’s diet means pets are not getting the nutrition they need to keep a healthy “gut flora” (a term to describe the population of healthy microorganisms in the GI Tract). When the balance is thrown off, the “bad bacteria” take over. Not only do pets no longer have big, burly bouncers in their stomach, throwing out the riff-raff, but the bad bacteria actually cause perforations in the stomach wall - basically opening the gate for their dangerous friends to enter the blood stream. These toxins can travel to the joints, causing arthritis, or can cause an allergic reaction or autoimmune response, which can result in skin problems or irritable bowel, diarrhea and gas, for example. Without the bouncers (good bacteria), your pet ends up with an environment similar to that on the television show “Jersey Shore”… Toxic.
The good news is: there are brilliant people out there who are aware of this state of affairs, educating pet owners, and providing “Answers” to your dog’s weakened digestive tract and immune system.
Jacqueline Hill is the Vice President of Answers Pet Food and I interviewed her on June 1, 2011 (Dog Talk Show #118). Answers Pet Food offers frozen, raw Goat’s Milk that you can add to your dog’s dry food (and cat’s!) to add back into the food, what the processing takes out.
“According to the Journal of American Medicine, ‘Goat milk is the most complete food known.’It contains vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, trace elements, enzymes, protein, and fatty acids all utilized by the body with ease. In fact the body can digest goat’s milk in 20 minutes. Having fat molecules one-fifth the size of those in cow’s milk makes it easily digestible and tolerable to those with compromised digestive systems.” (www.answerspetfood.com)
