Many who choose to follow a low carbohydrate diet often look into the concept of raw food and the raw food lifestyle. Some do not actively pursue this way of life, however others do. Will health shine through on a raw food diet? Or will carbohydrates from vegetables and fruits slowly sneak their way back in?
Carbohydrates from vegetable sources should not be frowned upon, because many of these wonderful, natural foods provide our bodies with amazing nutrients, from vitamins and fiber to minerals and antioxidants. It is not wise to completely cut out raw vegetables, even if they do contain carbohydrates.
There are ways to be a raw foodist, eat plenty of vegetables, yet still remain on a low carb diet. Many raw food recipes call for nuts and seeds, which are protein rich and naturally low in carbohydrates. Other foods are vegetables, which are fibrous carbohydrates (carbohydrates that your body doesn't digest) and fruits.
You can choose lower carbohydrate vegetables and fruits if you decide to go raw. Tomatoes and avocados, for example, or fruits that are relatively low in the sugar fructose (avocados have no sugar). Also, spinach is high fiber, but low in carbohydrates. In fact, one cup of raw spinach has a net of .05 gram of carbohydrate!
Some choose to still consume animal protein while eating raw foods. Raw milk, cheese, eggs and even beef have been known to be consumed in some raw food circles. If going down this path, it is always best to find a clean, organic source of these products.
Eating raw foods can become quite challenging on this end if devoid of animal protein. In order to receive the proper range of amino acids that your body can't produce, you need a complete protein (which is mainly found in animal products). Many argue that quinoa is a good source of all the essential amino acids, but the quality can be quite low. More studies need to determine whether or not quinoa and other plant proteins are a good source of the essential amino acids for the body to function properly over time.
