Ask some people, the best hangover remedies out there contain one special ingredient: a raw egg. For others, the thought of swallowing a raw egg during a hangover makes the stomach wiggle, even while they are sober. Nonetheless, egg-based remedies abound.

What is it about an egg that makes it a crucial ingredient in so many of these remedies? For one, eggs are saturated with cysteine, a powerful amino acid that helps your body fight off toxins, like alcohol. Eggs are also high in B vitamins that have long been thought to help reduce painful hangover symptoms. And eggs are full of protein, providing your ailing body some of the nutrients and energy it needs after a night of overindulgence.

Those are just a few reasons how an egg can help you out on a physical level, but doesn’t healing really begin in the mind? Perhaps an egg’s healing effects work psychologically as well. Eggs symbolize resurrection; just ask anybody who’s ever celebrated an Easter. When you’re writhing on the floor after a night of partying, the idea of rebirth doesn’t sound like such a bad idea. Maybe the brave act of downing a raw egg fills our heads with so much courage, our bodies can’t help but feel inspired. Voila! Instant healing.

As for us, we’ll stick to our own preferred hangover remedy: tomato juice and BC powder. But if you feel badass enough to try out one of the following remedies, be sure to let us know about it.

Prairie Oyster

1 egg
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
Salt and black pepper

Crack the egg into a glass without breaking the yolk, down in one.

Irish Breakfast

1 espresso
2 raw eggs
6 oz. Guinness Beer
6 oz. milk

Mix together and drink cold.

Bloody Beer

5 oz. of a pale lager beer (like Miller or Bud Light)
Dash of lemon juice
5 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
5 dashes of Tabasco sauce
5 oz. tomato juice
1 raw egg

Pour the tomato juice into a pint glass and then add beer and other ingredients to self-mix. Drink cold.
