Ravens expected to remain active in free agency

NFL free agency has finally commenced, and it appears as though the Baltimore Ravens will be more active than usual despite the fact that they have some spending constraints due to their salary cap situation.

As far as the team's free agents go, the Ravens are only expected to attempt to sign a few of them. The Ravens already managed to retain Dennis Pitta, Eugene Monroe, Jacoby Jones, and Daryl Smith.

Arthur Jones departed to sign with the Colts, which doesn't come as a surprise given their need to upgrade on the defensive side of the ball and head coach Chuck Pagano's ties to the Ravens.

Corey Graham joined his hometown Buffalo Bills, a bit of a surprise given that he wanted to be start at cornerback and will face stiff competition in Orchard Park.

An interesting wrinkle is the rumor that Rolando McClain is ending his one-year retirement and returning to football. He is set to enter the prime of his career and the Ravens still hold his rights.

Wide receiver is no longer a position of concern after the Ravens re-signed Jacoby Jones and also signed Steve Smith, who will be a perfect fit and fill a major need.

The Ravens have Torrey Smith and Pitta, as well as Ray Rice, to take some of the pressure off of Smith. Marlon Brown had a fine rookie season and would also help if he can pick up where he left off last year.

There will certainly be other big, intriguing names that are cut by other teams and suddenly find themselves on the open market.

It will be interesting to see what bargains Ozzie Newsome can unearth over the next few weeks, but he's already off to a strong start.
