In central Denver, just off the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and East Alameda Avenue, City Wine offers a tight, affordable collection of tasty wine. Their motto is "We drink what we can . . . and sell the rest!" This philosophy, and emphasis on service, has resonated with discerning wine drinking customers for 15 years. Hence, "Best of" wine store awards from Westword, 5280, and Wine & Spirits Magazine.
Charles Massirio and his co-owner have 65 years combined experience in the wine business. Now settled into their wine shop, they taste and focus on quality at “little prices.” They don’t look for the commercial big names, rather their focus is on value. Expertise put to work makes for affordable, well made wines for customers.
Their low key business model does not include weekly tastings, advertising, or promotional discounts. They have found their customers are too busy for tastings and not motivated by advertised sales. Instead, customers enjoy access to unique case lots, interesting vintner offerings, and bottles of limited distribution. These are often offered on special and highlighted in customer emails.
Otherwise, each month a new selection of wines are offered at a discount via a mixed case selection. There is a choice of bottles to make a $10 per bottle case and selections to choose between to make a $15 per bottle case. In both instances, your volume purchase gives you 20% off normal bottle pricing. The wine offered are described in an electronic newsletter and in the store. There is no commitment to purchase every month. When you are ready for more bottles of delicious wines, choose and call ahead, City Wine will have your case ready for pick up. Or venture into the store for feedback on why the wines were selected, or which would work better with your upcoming menus.
Here are two sensational, yet affordable, wines recommended by City Wine:
Chateau Graville-Lacoste 2008, Graves, France $16.99
“This value driven white Bordeaux from near Sauternes is creamy in it's youth. Made mostly of Semillon with a little Sauvignon Blanc.”
Clos la Coutale 2007, Cahors, France $15.99
“80% Malbec and 20% Merlot, from Southwest France, the ancestral home of Malbec. There’s a sense of elegance to the dark cherry, blackberry and plum flavors”
There are times when there’s a reason to celebrate. For example, every year City Wine celebrates the anniversary of the store opening with a sale of 20% off every bottle in the store. This sale is coming up March 22 - 28, 2010. For other celebrations, such as tastings with a vintner, an email is sent as an invitation.
So get to it. Sign up for City Wine’s email. Wine sold by wine lovers. No bottle a disappointment. Knowledgeable wine staff. You can’t go wrong here.
