This past Sunday night was a very busy night for television with the return of “Sunday Night Football” and “Boardwalk Empire,” as well as a new episode of the final season of “Breaking Bad.” In the end, it was football that took home the grand prize, while “Boardwalk Empire” was slightly down from last year, according to a Sept. 9 post from The Wrap.
The Prohibition-era drama brought in 2.4 million viewers in its initial 9 p.m. run – off from season three’s premiere haul of 2.9 million. “Breaking Bad,” which ran at the same time, had 5.1 million viewers. But it was the opener for “Sunday Night Football,” in which the Dallas Cowboys beat the New York Giants 36-31, that easily won with a 9.1 rating/23 share in the 18-49 crowd, according to Variety. Final numbers have not been released, due to time zone differences and the event being live.
Despite being down, the “Boardwalk Empire” premiere was up from the 2.3 million viewer average that all of season three earned.
“Boardwalk Empire” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
