Rat City KeyArena record breaking attendance

Rat City Roller Derby has the most awesome venue to play in and thanks to the sad departure of the NBA team Seattle Supersonics off to Omaha in 2008.  The KeyArena is now home to Seattle's Rat City Rollergirls.  KeyArena is located in the heart of Seattle Center.

It started off with an experiment during 2009 with a few dates to see if the team could draw at least 3000 people per bout.  With mass advertising they succeeded and the tickets sales began toppling over the set point.  June 5th was the first sold out bout at 6885 tickets that is an inspiring turn out.

"If next season's ticket sales continue like this, we will look at opening the curtains," says RCRG's Director of Business Operations, Alyssa "Lorna Boom" Hoppe, referring to the drapes obscuring the arena's upper tiers of seats.  KeyArena seats 15, 000 when the arena is set up for hockey, which is perfect for roller derby bouts.

More teams reported record breaking attendance this year and running completely out of paper tickets. Roller Derby is ecstatic to say the least.

Is it because of the movie release last year and again the CD release earlier this year of Drew Barrymore's 'Whip it?'

It has been discussed that roller derby once also thrived during the depression and tough economic times before is the cycle coming back around again?

What ever it is we like it and it is happening all over the nation, and all over the world. Support your local roller derby teams.   After each bout, after-parties (for ages 21 and older) take place at the nearby Funhouse, Seattle’s oldest surviving punk club.
