Rare Tony Sheridan interview premiering on two radio shows

The newly discovered tape of a 1992 interview with Beatles' friend Tony Sheridan that can be heard this week for the first time since its original broadcast has some candid comments about his career, the interviewer tells Beatles Examiner.

According to radio disc jockey Ken Michaels, who talked to Sheridan, the interview took place Nov. 14, 1992 during a Beatles Getaway Weekend organized by Charles Rosenay at the Pines Hotel in the Catskills, which no longer exists. Sheridan and Billy J. Kramer were special guests during that weekend.

“I was the DJ that weekend mixing lots of Beatles and solo music. It was a memorable weekend for me, not only because I got to interview Tony and start a friendship with Billy, but I also met my future wife and stepsons that weekend,” he says. The interview has Tony discussing when he first met the Beatles, what Bert Kaempfert was like producing their recordings, and discussing specific songs.”

He says he also got Sheridan to discuss a song that was a personal favorite of Michaels'. “I'm most proud of the fact that I got him to talk about my personal favorite of the songs he did with the Beatles, 'Why,' which in fact, Sheridan wrote, and though it's listed that he had a co-writer, Tony corrected me that he wrote the song himself. I've always loved that song. It's a great ballad with a 50's feel to it. Tony also discusses 'Nobody's Child,' and 'Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby.'”

Sheridan also revealed another piece of history. “What I found most interesting is that during a panel discussion at the hotel, Tony said that the Beatles offered to make him a permanent member of the group, which other people like Pete Best have confirmed to me. Tony also told me that he could have never been able to handle the level of fame that the Beatles achieved. Tony was quite candid and outspoken in the interview, which I found to be very refreshing. It was an honor and a privilege for me to have met the man who played such an important role in the history of the Beatles.”

Michaels will feature the interview this Wednesday, Feb. 27, on his “Every Little Thing” radio show, which airs from 8 to 10 p.m. EST on 88.7 WNHU, West Haven, CT, and online at www.wnhu.net. He says the interview will be featured during the show's final hour.

A clip from the show is also featured during the latest “Things We Said Today” show co-hosted with yours truly with guest Dave Humphries that is airing this weekend on Fab4Radio.com and in the downloadable version on Podbean.com. The interview will also be posted on Ken's website shortly after the WNHU broadcast.
