Today San Francisco police asked for the public’s help in finding a suspect for the attempted rape of a woman in the Mission District that occurred on January 6, and yesterday they announced the arrest of a rape suspect in a back yard on Green Street this weekend.
Jovan Jones, 25, of Marin City was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of rape, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, burglary and robbery.
A 26-year-old woman was entering her residence when, police allege, Jones forced his way in and then made the victim lie on the floor, threatening to kill her while also demanding money and other belongings.
Then, police say, he assaulted her.
SFPD spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak says that at about 8 p.m. someone nearby heard something that “caused them to be concerned,” and called authorities. When police arrived, Jones 'fled by jumping off of the balcony. Officers set up a perimeter and with assistance from a California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter they located and apprehended him,' according to an emailed statement from the SFPD.
He was arrested at about 9:20 p.m.
Andraychak says the woman picked Jones out of a photo lineup and positively identified him as her alleged rapist.
The press release says this appears to be an isolated incident and the investigation continues.
Today the SFPD sent out a press release asking for the public’s help in an attempted rape in the Mission District on January 6, at about 2:40 a.m.
A 31-year-old San Francisco woman told police that she was walking westbound on 23rd Street toward Church Street when she noticed a man walking toward her from a half block away. As the suspect got closer, she noticed he was staring at her.
She tried to avoid him but he lunged at her, grabbed her by the head and threw her to the pavement. According to police, he then 'straddled her and slammed her head onto the concrete. In the struggle, the victim was able to free herself and screamed for help.
'A person in the neighborhood heard the screaming, looked out the door and yelled at the suspect to leave the victim alone,' according to the press release.
Police say the suspect then ran eastbound on 23rd Street toward Valencia Street.
He is described as either Asian or Hispanic, approximately 25-years-old, about 5-feet, 10-inches tall with a “buzz” haircut and a slight beard growth, wearing a dark hooded shirt and dark pants.
Police urge anyone with information about this crime to contact them at 415.575.4444 or text to TIP411, with SFPD typed in at the beginning of the message.
