A young girl who was allegedly raped repeatedly by her step-father is facing a strict punishment for opening up to the police. The rape victim gets 100 lashes according to the court sentence because she had pre-marital sex with another man. The case happened in the Maldives, and the Daily Mail shared the details on Feb. 27.
The 15-year-old girl was reportedly abused by her step-father for years, and the two were arrested after the body of a baby she birthed was found buried outside her home. The step-father is facing 25 years in prison for sexually abusing a minor, possessing pornography and allegedly killed the baby his step-daughter had. The girl's mother has been charged with murder and concealing a crime. The young rape victim gets 100 lashes for apparently telling police later that she had consensual sex with another man.
If the sentence stands, the girl will be under house arrest until she turns 18, at which time the flogging will take place. She could choose to receive the punishment earlier. The Maldives are a strict Islamic country, and Amnesty International has called the charges “outrageous.” The molestation by her step-father is said to be a separate issue from the pre-marital sex, according to the BBC.
Even the government is said to disagree with the punishment indicating that the rape victim gets 100 lashes for the charge of having had pre-marital sex. This gives some hope that perhaps the young girl will be spared what most consider a cruel, degrading sentence, especially considering what she has gone through at the hands of her step-father.
