“Rape victim 100 lashes” became a trending topic on news searches this week after the Daily Mail reported this Wednesday, Feb. 27, that a teenage girl, 15, who was reportedly raped by her stepfather, is now being sentenced by a Maldives court to 100 lashes for engaging in pre-marital sex with a different man.
Police officials in the rigid Islamic country are currently investigating claims that the girl was sexually abused by her stepfather. They have now found new evidence that has led them to believe the 15-year-old may have been having consensual sex with another man during this time, leading to her 100 lashes punishment.
The girl and her stepfather were originally arrested after the body of a newborn baby she’d given birth to was uncovered, being buried underneath their house in late mid 2012. The stepfather is now facing 25 years in prison for the rape of his stepdaughter, as well as being charged with murder and sexually abusing a minor.
The girl most recently acknowledged that she did engage in consensual sex with another man, and is now being charged herself for this admittance. The “rape victim 100 lashes” search term swept internet search engines after news hit that the daughter will be placed under house arrest until she turns 18, when the flogging will take place.
The government of Maldives is asking the court to be lenient against the girl, as her being traumatized by the rape needs to be taken into consideration, concluded the report.
