Ranks of electric motorcycles continue to grow

In the early days of automobiles there were hundreds of American car companies, each hoping to survive the inevitable shake-out that followed. That we speak today of the "Big Three" says all we need to know about the success of most of them.

There may not yet--or ever--be hundreds of electric motorcycle companies but the number continues to grow nevertheless. Half an hour's searching on the Web led me to 20 companies and I know there are more. They range all the way from scooters to superbikes, and while some names are familiar, most are probably not.

Sales numbers are still small, in keeping with the limited range of most of these machines, but as battery technology increases--and it will--we can expect to see the sales numbers increase as well. Already Brammo is preparing to release a new generation of bike that claims twice the mileage capability of its initial offering. In this series of articles I'll give you a quick run-down of my admittedly incomplete list of what's out there now or on its way.

For the foreseeable future, most of us are too in love with our gasoline engines to be swayed by electric.
