As the NFL preseason kicks into full gear, we will be taking a look into the top players at each position. The breakdown of the players will be within the division itself. The first players we will be taking a look at are the signal callers. The quarterback position is arguably the most important position in sports.
The NFC South has a collection of very good quarterbacks within the division. They have a Super Bowl winner with Drew Brees in New Orleans. The South also has Matt Ryan in Atlanta. Ryan led the Falcons to the NFC Championship and they were on the cusp of earning a Super Bowl trip.
The two younger quarterbacks in the division are Josh Freeman and Cam Newton. It’s time for both young guns to step up into a more developed leadership role.
Only one quarterback led their team into the playoffs last season, and that was Matt Ryan. Drew Brees and the Saints dealt with turmoil the previous offseason, thus their season turned dismal quickly. Lack of coaching ultimately was the undoing in New Orleans.
Here are the NFC South quarterback rankings.
4. Josh Freeman- Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Josh Freeman surpassed the 4000 yard mark and also threw 27 touchdowns. Unfortunately he gave up 17 interceptions in 2012 as well. He must finish strong in the second half of this season. The only way Tampa will earn a playoff trip is for Josh to play like a pro bowler.
3. Matt Ryan- Atlanta Falcons- This is no indictment on Matt Ryan ranking 3rd. He will have another phenomenal season with the Falcons. Last season Ryan completed 68 percent of his passes and won his first playoff game. Can he lead the Falcons to the Super Bowl?
2. Cam Newton- Carolina Panthers- With Cam Newton, it doesn’t matter about stats. It only matters if he wins. For Carolina to be successful, Cam has to play his game. He also must become more accurate with the intermediate passes. Cam Newton needs to take the running lanes and stay aggressive.
1. Drew Brees- New Orleans Saints- Drew Brees threw 43 touchdown passes in a rough year. However, he also added 19 interceptions. This year looks like payback for the Saints and Drew Brees will be the ring leader.
