Randy Travis may face jail time now that Sherman, Texas prosecutors have filed a DWI charge against the country and gospel music icon, E! News reported on Friday, Jan 11.
Larry Friedman, Travis’ attorney, issued a statement that Randy has been charged with one count of driving while intoxicated following toxicology tests found he had a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.15, and the legal limit in Texas is 0.08.
The charges come after an incident on Aug. 7, 2012 when Randy Travis, having crashed his car, was found lying naked in the road and smelling of alcohol. The DWI count is punishable by a maximum two-year jail sentence and a $4,000 fine.
Separate charges may follow for felony retaliation for allegedly threatening the arresting officers. Those charges remain under investigation.
The Grayson County District Attorney said, “The case has taken some time because of blood tests that have been completed by both the prosecution and the defense.” Both sides are working on a possible plea deal in order to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.
Friedman went on to say that the drunk-driving charge “is pretty usual for this type of situation,” and expressed confidence that he and the prosecutors would work things out.
“Randy has a lot of respect for law enforcement in Grayson [Texas]. He’s cooperating fully. He recognizes his situation and he is tending to his personal matters. And we will decide between now and the end of the month whether he pleads not guilty or agrees to another plea that involves rehabilitation.”
Randy Travis, who was divorced from his wife Elizabeth Travis in 2010 after 19 years of marriage, faced several years of personal and professional problems. Elizabeth Travis was also Randy’s manager for over 25 years. In 2012 Lib Travis asked a judge to throw out Randy Travis’ lawsuit in which he claimed she breached her contract and ruined his career.
Last month Randy Travis pleaded not guilty to a charge of simple assault that stemmed from a February 2012 incident when Travis was arrested for public intoxication after an argument he had with his alleged girlfriend’s estranged husband.
