March 3rd is National Mulled Wine Day! Mulled wine is a traditional beverage of Scandinavia and usually consumed during the fall and winter months. What is mulled wine, you ask? It’s a hearty concoction of red wine, sugar and spices as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves and bitter orange and the like. It can also be made with vodka, brandy and akavit. It is thoroughly heated and then steeped for about an hour to infuse the flavors. Served warm or piping hot, mulled wine is perfect for cozy nights.

While few places serve mulled wine beyond the holiday season, that didn’t stop Nikki Sunseri, Beverage Director at LA hotspots Dominick’s and Little Dom’s from sharing her recipe. Now you can enjoy the best mulled wine whenever the mood or weather hits.

MULLED WINE

• 300 grams of Sugar
• 15 pods of cardamom (crushed)
• 20 whole cloves
• 10 star anise (crushed)
• 3 cinnamon sticks (crushed)
• 1 pod of nutmeg (grated)
• 1 bourbon vanilla bean
• 4 oranges juice and peels
• 2 lemons (just the peels of these)
• 4 bottles of dry Italian wine (Chianti)
• 1/2 c cognac

Put all the sugar, spices, peels and juice in a pot with 3/4 cup of wine. Make a syrup by bringing it to a boil. To know it's ready the syrup should coat the back of a spoon. Then you add the rest of your wine and it should just get hot enough to scorch your wrist. DO NOT BOIL! Take off the heat then add the cognac. Strain into a coffee canister to keep it warm for your guests!
