After filibustering for almost 13 hours in the United States Senate last night against the John Brennan CIA Director nomination to highlight the administration's drone policy, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) declared victory today. Fox News reports the senator said “Hooray” in response to the letter from Attorney General Eric Holder that the administration will not attack noncombatant American citizens on American soil with drones.
Paul had demanded such an assurance during the filibuster last night that lasted 12 hours and 52 minutes. He appeared this afternoon during the 1:00 PM hour of the Rush Limbaugh Show radio program, which reportedly has 30 million listeners each week. Within minutes after the interview, the White House issued the letter on the use of drones against American citizens written by Eric Holder.
The letter from Attorney General Holder simply stated:
“It has come to my attention that you have now asked an additional question: “Does the President have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil?” The answer to that question is no.”
“We want them to answer something that every American believes, that you can not target an American on American soil without due process,” Senator Paul said this afternoon in summing up the issue at stake with domestic drone usage, “I'm concerned (Americans) ought to get a trial before they get a drone strike.”
Paul said earlier today the issue was getting an answer from the White House on whether it would allow Americans not engaged in combat to be targeted by drone strikes on American soil without arrest and due process.
“I think we will get an answer,” from the White House, Paul said.
Senator Rand Paul did that answer, rather quickly today, in the form of the short letter to him from Attorney General Eric Holder.
Paul said, of the response, “we're proud to announce that the president is not going to kill unarmed Americans on American soil.”
