There are news in Argentina that sometimes overshadow the national team and there are two clubs that can do that. Ramón Díaz has reached the top of the mountain and then left on top once again. During Tuesday’s club executive board meeting, president Rodolfo D’Onofrio along with Matías Patanián and sporting director Enzo Francescoli spoke with Ramón Díaz and his assistant coach and son Emiliano about the prospect of staying on with the club.

The answer was a negative. Ramón Díaz decided to leave while the going was good and he had bolstered his legacy as the winningest coach in club history after winning the first league title in six years as well as the superfinal against torneo inicial champs San Lorenzo.

The club then released a statement talking about the decision that was made by both he and his top assistant.

According to the statement, the answer was a negative. Díaz mentioned that he accomplished his goals and decided to ride into the sunset.

There are others that have also said that Díaz’ departure also comes on the heels of the arrivlal of other heavyweights in River Plate history such Beto Alonso and Enzo Francescoli. Those two individuals have a great deal of clout within the club. According to many, that would take a great deal of power away from Díaz.

Díaz took over as River Plate coach in late 2012 after the club sacked Matías Almeyda with three matches left in the torneo inicial that year. Díaz replaced Almeyda the same semester that saw River returning to the first division after having been relegated for the first time in the club’s history.

The club also announced that Gustavo Zapata would be the caretaker manager for the club in their upcoming tour where they will face Boca Juniors in Mexico this coming weekend.
