The search to find more peace and love in our lives can be endless, as long as you keep your mind open to it. And an open mind can guide you toward new experiences and possibilities you have yet to imagine. Isn’t that just grand?
Ever read a book and enjoy it so much that another containing similar content soon catches your eye? That’s a sure sign that you need to explore it. And ignore the signs then you may regret not acting on them later. Have you ever had someone you know, or even a complete stranger, engage you in conversation where they recommend a book, person or workshop that you, “just have to check out?” What is that saying, again? You know the one, “when the student is ready the teachers will come.”
Well, if you find yourself reading this article then you have found a great teacher too. And thanks to the internet, this teacher and his resources are available almost anywhere a virtual connection can be made. So go ahead, and read on.
Ram Dass (his name means “Servant of God”), an international spiritual figure has shared his teachings with over three generations of people during the course of his lifetime. This American psychologist has dedicated his life to studying the various practices of meditation, helping to bring Eastern wisdom to the West. Dass has experimented with various mantras, prayers, songs, visualizations and movement meditations like Tai Chi. And has written several books including, Journey of Awakening: A Meditator’s Guide.
Though published in 1978, this particular book includes timeless wisdom that can help quiet the mind and bring about more love into one’s life. Within his book, Dass expounds upon the impact of enlightenment when self-realization practices are implemented. Known for his humor, this book is great for beginners and more advanced individuals alike. He highlights obstacles that people often encounter and offers solutions to them as well. And being the grand teacher of self-realization, Dass always encourages his readers to choose their own path in the end. Further demonstrating his wisdom and ability to put his practices into place.
Aside from writing this book, that same year, Dass co-founded the Seva Foundation. Sanskrit for “spiritual service,” this non-profit is an international service organization with a mission geared toward alleviating the suffering caused by disease and poverty. With operations in ten countries, Seva works to develop and support projects on health and wellness, community development, environmental protection and cultural preservation. The organization also offers volunteer opportunities in California, where they are based in the U.S., along with others within the countries they do work. And functioning as a charity, donations are key in order to continue operations, so gifts are accepted directly on their website.
A truly dynamic individual, Ram Dass’ practice of karma yoga and spiritual service has assisted millions of people in discovering a deeper path toward their own self-awareness. Skills that encourage enlightement and help to bring about more peace and love into the lives of many. Begin with one and soon many follow. So why not look into his work and experience the wisdom that can help bring about healing to the entire planet. Can you imagine that?

It's nice to see/feel your appreciation of Ram Dass' material; he's a pioneer whose explorations and research in consciousness have, as you said, touched millions; I've enjoyed paying attention to him/his "journeys" since 1974. If you liked the book you reviewed, check out his most famous work (which came a few years earlier): "Be Here Now." It woke up and informed a whole lotta' young folks about the potency of Eastern philosophy & the value of regularly practicing meditation. I know; I've been doing Transcendental Meditation for 36 years, now, 2x a day for 20 minutes. It's the best thing I've ever done in my life, bringing me to such a deeper awareness of my Self and my true connection to the world. Back in the early 70's (after learning TM), Ram Dass (& others) inspired me to go deeper still, so I went to India in 1981 for 5 weeks--another Self-awakening experience! Anyway, thanks for your nice article about a man who deserves some attention. Cheers,
Willy (www.BookEditorCoach.com)
Thank you for leaving your comment, Willy. And for your recommendation about Dass' "Be Here Now" book. I have not had the pleasure of reading that one, so I just added it to my ever growing book list. And It's fascinating that you have been studying TM for over 36 years now. I started just a few years back so when I stumbled upon this book, I found it to contain valuable information about the whole meditation process. And discovered it to be a valuable tool as well. Ram Dass is a wonderful teacher and dynamic individual. I would love to hear more about your trip to India as it is on my 'places I would like to visit' list. I will have to check out your website...who knows, maybe you might be of some assistance with the book I am writing. Enjoy your week!
Wow! Time flies, eh? I was just doing some research for a client and "found my way" back to this thread... to discover your kind response! India? My 5-week trip was one of the most impacting experiences of my life: all my senses were taken to indescribably more rich, exotic and downright nasty dimensions (some smells and tastes I will never forget!), my soul's capacity for extended samadhi was unexpectedly expanded, I picked up amoebic dysentery and so suffered immensely, and I had romance, intrigue and mystic encounters appear out of the blue, seemingly daily, like it was no big deal! What an adventure! (I was there for an international symposium on the Vedas and Science--a way cool gathering!). Anyway, Sarah, I'm imagining it's a whole 'nuther place, these days... Still, I'd say pray about it, and go if you feel so moved. On a final note, may I inquire whether you're still involved in writing or developing your book? Do you need help getting it up to publishing industry standards (i.e., top-notch,professional editing)? If so, review my website (www.BookEditorCoach.com) to see some recent client successes, my approach to editing, and how to get a sense about whether or not I can help you touch countless readers' lives and get the results you're looking for (i.e., I offer some complimentary editing to each prospective client). Regardless of your interest level, Sarah, Best Wishes and a Joyous New Year to you & yours! Cheers, Willy
