Yesterday, Ram trucks provided the announcement that they will have the broadest and most coverage of acceptance and alignment with standardized SAE towing standards. The Society of Automotive Engineers adopted these standards several years go so as to level the playing field. Without adherence to these standards, a truck can claim almost any figure that they can back up with some statistics.
Not all the Ram trucks exceed their competition in the various segments, but quite a few definitely do set the mark of 'best.' Ram is a separate division of the Chrysler Corporation, having broke with Dodge back in 2009. The company is making huge strides to establish themselves in a fairly crowded field of pickup trucks, especially taking into account all the engine sizes, cab configurations, and towing capacity. With this alignment with SAE, Ram is saying that authenticity and honesty are as important to pickup truck buyers as claiming various numbers for bragging rights.
Other manufacturers have also begun to use the SAE standards for their towing claims, but effective just this week, Ram is the only pickup manufacturer to use the SAE standards in their towing claims across all three segments of trucks – light duty, three-quarter ton, and one-ton.
The SAE towing standards are called J2807, which is a standardized test designed by automotive engineers. In simple terms, it measures the truck towing capacity of every truck. If the various truck manufacturers arrive at their numbers by different methods, then almost anyone can lay claim to the largest number. The standards provide a fair comparison from manufacturer to manufacturer and therefore help keep consumers informed with accurate and honest information. The SAE tests are scheduled so as to simulate driving conditions that regular truck drivers and operators would probably encounter in real-world situations. The tests, of course, include horsepower and engine torque. Again, Ram trucks is the first fully adopted group for the SAE towing standards across their line-up to include the ½-ton, 3/4-ton, and 1-ton trucks.
The RAM public relations folks are making strong note about the heavy duty Ram 3500. They are calling this truck 'Best-in-class' for the SAE group 30,000 lbs. The Ram 3500 is powered by a 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel. In addition to this heavy duty truck, the Ram 1500 is in the top position of pickup fuel economy and tops in SAE towing for V-6 engines.
