The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel power train has established a new fuel economy benchmark for the full-size, half-ton segment - according to a Ram Brand announcement (Feb. 4) that the 3.0L EcoDiesel earned a 28 mpg rating from the EPA.

After achieving a segment best ever half-ton fuel-economy rating of 25 mpg highway in 2013 in a Ram 1500 equipped with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 gasoline engine, the new Ram EcoDiesel sets another and higher bar for the total segment (as the only diesel engine in the segment) while continuing their leadership with the gasoline Ram 1500 in 2014.

Both engines are coupled with the segment-exclusive TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission, which is a significant contributor to the Ram 1500’s fuel efficiency through the application of a wider range of power and torque to the drive train under a full range of driving conditions.

“The new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is truly in a class of it’s own with 28 mpg and the ability to tow 9200 pounds,” says Reid Bigland, President and CEO Ram Truck Brand. “To put the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel in context, it gets 6 mpg better fuel economy than the best F150 Eco-Boost. Overall, the Ram 1500 Eco-Diesel has outstanding pick-up truck capability with compact-car-like fuel economy.”

As the first and only advanced-technology turbo-diesel offering in the half-ton pickup segment, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, with its peak torque of 420 lb.-ft. also leads the segment in haul capacity (9200 pounds) for full-size trucks equipped with V-6 engines.

Named one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines for 2014, the EcoDiesel V-6 was a significant factor in the Ram 1500’s selection as 2014 Motor Trend Truck of the Year. The Ram 1500 became the first vehicle to win this prestigious award in back to back years.

The Ram Brand announcement today confirms our experience in a recent first drive of a pre-production Ram 1500 EcoDiesel where we drove for three days both city and highway and under load - achieving 26.8 mpg.

Dealers will begin taking orders for the EcoDiesel on Feb. 7.

Pricing for the 2014 Ram 1500 starts at $24,200, plus $1,195 destination. The exclusive V-6 EcoDiesel with TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission is priced $2,850 greater than a similarly equipped Ram 1500 with a 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 with TorqueFlite 8-speed transmission.
